Edward Burr went to sea at the age of 13 on the ship Virtue, captained by Henry Caldwell.
At twenty-three, he was made acting-lieutenant on the same ship. After French prisoners attempted to take Virtue, Captain Caldwell was killed. Caldwell's wishes were committed to paper and sealed, and those, when delivered by the acting captain, were enough to secure Edward testing to pass for lieutenant.
He passed his examination and was made lieutenant of Spitfire by Captain Charles Orr. He followed Orr to Revelation, where he was third lieutenant. He served briefly as fourth lieutenant on Alexander, during the Battle of the Nile.
(Edward Burr is an entirely fictional character, whom I have chosen James D'Arcy to portray. I am not Mr. Burr or Mr. D'Arcy.)
